## What makes a deed poll legally valid?

A deed poll is valid once you declare you abandon your old name, adopt the new one for all purposes, require everyone to use it, and sign in ink before two independent witnesses. No prescribed form, paper, issuer or registry. No solicitor, court or government approval.

Read the full process in our [name change UK guide](/how-to-change-your-name-uk/). The paper is titled CHANGE OF NAME DEED — see [what a change of name deed is](/change-of-name-deed/). Timing: [how long a deed poll takes](/how-long-does-a-deed-poll-take/).

GOV.UK itself publishes the model wording and confirms that “a specialist agency or a solicitor can make the deed poll for you – they may charge a fee”. Our document uses that model wording with your details merged in. If you would rather copy it yourself, use the [free template](/free-deed-poll-template/) — the legal effect is identical.

|
Route | Typical cost | When it wins

| DIY from government wording | Free | You will copy the wording and signature blocks carefully

| InstantDeedPoll PDF | £14.99 once | You want formatting, instructions and a wording guarantee

| Posted competitor | £17–£36 | You specifically want paper in the post

| High Court enrolment | £53.05 from age 18 | A named organisation has demanded the Gazette record

| Solicitor-drafted deed | £150–£300 | You need legal advice, not just the document

## Who accepts a home-printed deed poll?

HM Passport Office, the DVLA, HMRC, UK banks, the NHS, employers and universities all accept an unenrolled deed poll you print and sign at home. A printout you then sign in ink is an original document — what HMPO rejects is a photocopy of an already-signed document, not a freshly signed printout. Posted paper is not more legal.

For a passport you will also need one document showing your new name in use, dated within the last 12 months, such as a bank statement or payslip. See [how to change the name on your passport](/change-name-passport/). Honest comparison with a posted incumbent: [vs UK Deed Poll Service](/compare/instantdeedpoll-vs-deedpoll-org-uk/).

## How do I sign and witness my deed poll?

You sign twice — once in your old name and once in your new name — while two witnesses, each 18 or over and independent of you (not relatives, partners or housemates), physically watch. They then sign and add their names and addresses. Print and sign three to four copies so you hold multiple originals. Never use an electronic signature.

HMPO and the DVLA require wet ink. If you later lose a signed copy, print again and sign a fresh original — [lost deed poll guidance](/replace-lost-deed-poll/). Do not pay an archive retrieval fee for a scan.

## Do I ever need to enrol my deed poll?

Around 98–99% of people never need to enrol. Enrolment adds a permanent public record in The Gazette, not extra legal validity. The court fee is £53.05 from age 18 (GOV.UK, checked 13 August 2026). We do not sell enrolment. Ask the organisation that demanded it, in writing, before you pay the court.

## In Scotland, or asked for a statutory declaration instead?

In Scotland a statutory declaration is the standard name-change instrument, and deed polls are also accepted. If an organisation specifically asks for a statutory declaration, our tailored 1835-Act PDF is £9.99 plus the statutory £5 witnessing fee. The Name Change Pack bundles both documents with notification letters for £25.

## Frequently asked questions

### Who can change their name with an adult deed poll?+

Anyone aged 16 or over in the UK can change their own name by deed poll — first names, middle names, surname, spelling, or any combination. You don’t need a reason, a solicitor, or anyone’s permission.

### How many witnesses do I need and who can they be?+

Two witnesses, each aged 18 or over, who are independent of you — not relatives, not partners, and not living at your address. They must be physically present, watch you sign, then sign and add their names and addresses.

### Do I sign in my old name or my new name?+

Both. You sign the deed poll twice — once in your old name and once in your new name — with both witnesses watching each signature. Our document has clearly marked signature blocks for each.

### How many copies should I print?+

We recommend printing and signing three to four copies. Each copy you sign in ink counts as an original, so you’ll have spares when banks or HM Passport Office ask to see an original rather than a photocopy.

### Can I use an electronic signature?+

No. A deed poll is a deed: HM Passport Office and the DVLA require the original wet-ink document, signed in front of physically present witnesses. Print it, sign it in ink — that’s the only reliably accepted method.

### Is an unenrolled deed poll really enough for a passport?+

Yes. HMPO accepts unenrolled deed polls. You’ll submit your signed deed poll plus one document showing your new name in use dated within 12 months. Enrolment at the Royal Courts of Justice is optional and adds no extra validity.
