How does a deed poll work for a trans name change?
Exactly as it does for anyone: a declaration that you abandon your old name and adopt your new name for all purposes, signed in ink in both names in front of two independent witnesses aged 18 or over. It takes effect immediately, and HMPO, the DVLA, HMRC, banks and the NHS all accept an unenrolled deed poll. The form asks for your names, address and date of birth — nothing else, and never a reason.
How private is the process?
An unenrolled deed poll is a private document: there is no register and no publication. We treat name pairs as sensitive identity data — retained only for 12 months to honour your re-download link, never used in marketing, and handled discreetly in any support correspondence. What order should I update my records in?
Driving licence (free) or passport first — one becomes your name-in-use evidence — then bank, HMRC, employer, GP and NHS records, and everything else. The full sequence is in our who to notify checklist.
Is a deed poll the same as a Gender Recognition Certificate?
No — they do different things. A deed poll changes your name, and most organisations will also update your title on request. A Gender Recognition Certificate changes your legal gender on your birth certificate and follows a separate application process on gov.uk. Many trans people need only the deed poll for day-to-day life.
