We both want a new shared surname — can the certificate do that?

When the certificate is enough

One partner taking the other’s surname is the certificate route: show the civil partnership certificate to HMPO, the DVLA, your bank and employer, and each updates your surname. It works for either partner, of any sex. Update your driving licence (free) or passport first so you hold photo ID in the new name, then work through the who to notify checklist.

When you need a deed poll

Certificates can only evidence taking an existing surname. Everything creative needs a deed poll for each partner: double-barrelling both names, meshing them into a new one (Harper + Mason → Harson), both partners adopting an entirely new family name, or changing forenames at the same time. Each of you completes the three-minute form and signs your own document before two witnesses.

After dissolution

Names survive dissolution untouched — you choose if and when to revert.
