How to change your name on your driving licence

The current DVLA name-change process is postal. Use the correct application form and send the required documents with your existing licence. An online service for changing an address or replacing a licence is not a substitute for the name-change application. Northern Ireland also uses a postal process for a name change.

Start with the type of licence you hold. A Great Britain licence is dealt with by DVLA. If you have a Northern Ireland licence, go to the DVA section below. That distinction prevents sending original documents to the wrong office.

If both your name and address have changed, complete the relevant details on the correct form. Check the form instructions for your circumstances rather than submitting overlapping applications with different names. An unfinished online address update does not prove the name has been amended.

Use form D1 for a car or motorbike licence and D2 for a lorry or bus licence. GOV.UK says these are available from most Post Offices. Read the guidance supplied with the form, enter your current details carefully, and complete the sections that explain the change from your previous name.

Keep a copy or private photograph of your completed application for reference. Check your signature, date and return address before sealing the envelope. If the application includes another service, such as a replacement for a lost licence, use the relevant fee and instructions too.

Send the completed form, your existing licence and original evidence supporting the new name. If you rely on a deed poll or statutory declaration, current DVLA guidance also requires a document showing your new name. Check its accepted-document list and date rules; the name-change deed alone is not the complete evidence checklist.

• Completed application: D1 or D2, as appropriate.
• Current licence: your photocard or paper licence, unless it is lost, stolen or destroyed and you explain that on the form.
• Name-change evidence: use the original document requested for your route.
• Additional new-name evidence: required under DVLA’s current deed poll or statutory declaration instructions.
• Photo or payment: include these if required for a paper licence, photo change or replacement.

DVLA says not to send photocopies or laminated certificates. Certificates must be signed and dated. Review the evidence instructions immediately before applying, especially if you have more than one previous name.

DVLA lists several types of supporting document for people using a deed poll or statutory declaration. Examples include a UK bank statement, official employer letter, tax record or qualifying utility bill issued within the last 12 months. Other listed identity documents have separate validity and issue-date requirements, so choose evidence from the current list.

The purpose is to show the name is being used, as well as how it changed. Ask an employer or another suitable record-holder for a document in the exact new name once it has updated your details. Check dates and spelling before including it.

A self-written cover letter is useful for explaining an application, but is not automatically a substitute for the required third-party evidence. A receipt for buying a deed poll is not proof that a bank, employer or government department uses the new name.

GOV.UK also lists options such as a valid non-GB licence, UK passport number, non-UK passport or national identity card, with issue-date conditions. Consult the official list for the complete alternatives.

DVLA accepts marriage or civil partnership certificates as evidence for surname changes. It also lists evidence routes for divorce and the end of a civil partnership. Use the route that explains your change, rather than assuming every married applicant must first buy a deed poll or replace a passport.

If you are taking your spouse’s surname, your certificate may already provide the connection DVLA needs. If you are combining surnames, creating a blend or changing a first name, check that the evidence supports the full new name. Ask DVLA if the connection is unclear.

For reverting after divorce, DVLA’s list includes divorce or dissolution documents together with a birth, adoption or UK naturalisation certificate. Follow the exact combination in the official instructions. A single document that does not connect the names can leave an application incomplete.

DVLA does not charge for changing your name or gender alone. A fee can apply if you also change the photo or cannot return the old licence because it is lost, stolen or destroyed. Keep those charges separate from any optional fee for preparing a deed poll, plus printing or postage.

The postal address depends on your licence category. GOV.UK lists Swansea SA99 1BN for car and motorbike name-change applications, and SA99 1BR for lorry and bus applications. Recheck the current form and official page before posting originals, and use the address for the application you are actually making.

Check the postcode character by character. Keep proof of posting and consider a tracked service when sending valuable originals. GOV.UK’s identity guidance explains how to include a suitable prepaid return envelope if you want the supporting documents returned with tracking.

Your licence and identity documents can arrive separately. Receiving one envelope does not mean an item in the other has been lost; check the current official contact guidance if documents remain outstanding.

These situations add requirements to a straightforward name update. A paper-licence application needs a recent printed passport-style photograph. If the old licence cannot be returned, explain why and check the replacement fee. A requested photo change has its own instructions, so review the application as a whole before posting it.

Do not describe a missing licence as enclosed. State what happened and follow the form’s replacement instructions. If the photocard has expired or the photograph also needs renewing, check the relevant renewal guidance rather than assuming a free name change settles every outstanding issue.

For photos, use the requirements supplied by DVLA, including any identity confirmation needed for your application. A document-preparation service does not validate your photograph or assess driving entitlement.

Read the official page with the form beside you and mark each extra item you need to include. This is usually more useful than relying on a generic three-item checklist.

GOV.UK says you can still drive while waiting for the new licence in a name-change application. That statement does not remove other restrictions on your entitlement to drive. If your licence has expired, you have a medical issue, or another restriction applies, check the relevant DVLA guidance for your circumstances.

Keep a record of your licence number and application. If you need to hire a vehicle or travel abroad while the physical licence is away, ask the hire company or destination authority what it will accept before making arrangements. Being entitled to drive does not guarantee a company will rent you a car without the document.

Tell your motor insurer about the new name through its own process and keep the policy details consistent. A licence update is not a notification to the insurer.

The timing depends on your application and whether DVLA needs further evidence. Check current DVLA processing information when you apply instead of treating the speed of preparing a deed poll as the licence turnaround time. Leave room for postal delivery and for the supporting documents to be returned separately from the new licence.

If you need the document for another application, plan the order before sending it. Where appropriate, properly executed additional deed poll originals can help you avoid posting your only original to several places in succession.

If an application comes back, read the reason carefully. A missing new-name document, unsuitable photo or incomplete form needs the specific correction requested. Buying a more expensive deed poll will not solve every evidence problem.

Contact DVLA through GOV.UK if you need an update. Have your application details and posting date ready. Do not send a duplicate application without checking how that will affect the one already being processed.

Yes. Changing the name on your driving licence does not automatically update the V5C vehicle log book, your motor insurance or every vehicle-related account. If you are the registered keeper, follow the separate V5C name-change process. Tell your insurer directly, and review any vehicle-tax payment arrangement or other motoring accounts that use your name.

• V5C: check the instructions for your version of the log book and any evidence required. Do not register a new keeper simply because the same keeper has changed name.
• Insurance: ask the insurer to update the policyholder and driver details as appropriate.
• Vehicle finance or leasing: tell the provider if the agreement is in your previous name.
• Parking permits and breakdown cover: check whether they need a separate account update.

Keep licence and vehicle records on separate lines of your checklist. It is easy to finish one and overlook the other.

Use DVA’s Northern Ireland process, not DVLA’s Great Britain instructions. Nidirect says a name change cannot be reported online: complete a DL1 and post it with the required documents. Follow the current DL1 guidance for the address, evidence, licence parts and any applicable fees, rather than sending your application to Swansea.

Northern Ireland licences have a photocard and a paper counterpart. Check which parts must accompany the application. Use the official instructions linked from nidirect if a part is missing or other details need updating at the same time.

The V5C is still a separate vehicle-record task. DVA also asks drivers to keep it informed of other relevant changes; follow those instructions if more than your name has changed.
