How to change your name on a bank account
Quick answer
Updated · Editorial policy
What do HSBC, NatWest and Lloyds require?
Use the bank’s own policy for your account and proposed change. These are examples of published UK personal-banking routes, checked on 12 September 2026. They do not cover every product or mean the banks have endorsed our service.
| Bank | Contact route | Evidence to check |
|---|---|---|
| HSBC UK | Visit a branch. | Bring proof of the name change and evidence of your previous or other name. HSBC lists a witnessed deed poll or statutory declaration for other name changes. Check HSBC UK’s policy. |
| NatWest UK | App with biometric security, telephone banking or branch, following NatWest’s instructions. | NatWest lists registered or non-registered deed polls and statutory declarations for other name changes. Branch visits also need your debit card and photo ID. Check NatWest UK’s policy. |
| Lloyds Bank | Check app eligibility, or use Lloyds’ change-name form in branch or by post. | Lloyds’ published personal-account list specifies an enrolled deed poll or other listed evidence, including a statutory declaration. Check before relying on an unenrolled deed poll. Check Lloyds Bank’s policy. |
Check the exact business: NatWest UK and NatWest International have different instructions. Business accounts, mortgages and insurance can also have separate procedures. Follow the current page for your actual provider.
Do banks accept an unenrolled deed poll?
Some do, but there is no single acceptance policy for all UK banks. NatWest’s published guidance expressly allows registered or non-registered deeds. Lloyds’ current personal-account list specifies an enrolled deed poll or other listed evidence. If your bank asks for something different, clarify its alternatives before incurring another cost.
A paid unenrolled deed poll does not become an enrolled deed because a company printed it. Ask whether the issue is the document type, how it was signed, the identity evidence or another account requirement. Read our enrolled and unenrolled deed poll guide before deciding whether enrolment is appropriate.
Can I change my bank name after marriage or divorce?
Start with the bank’s certificate route. A marriage or civil-partnership certificate is listed by the banks above for relevant changes. Returning to a former surname after divorce may require a combination of records linking your names. A new first name or unrelated surname can require different evidence.
Check the full name you want displayed, including spaces and hyphens, before submitting. Keep copies of your request and check the replacement card and next statement. Our guides explain name changes after marriage and returning to a previous name after divorce.
What should I prepare before contacting my bank?
Have the exact proposed name and the bank’s evidence list ready. Before travelling to a branch or posting originals, ask whether your account can use an app route, whether an appointment is needed and how your documents will be returned. Use the bank’s app, official website or number printed on your card.
- Check whether the bank wants originals, certified copies or an image submitted through its specified process.
- Keep the document linking your old and new names safe.
- Ask which linked accounts and cards will be updated.
- Confirm whether savings, mortgage or insurance records need separate contact.
- Check whether payment details or instructions need to change; do not assume they do.
These are practical preparation questions, not a substitute for the bank’s identity checks. Never send account details or identity documents to Instant Deed Poll to update a bank account.
Can a new bank statement help with DVLA or passport evidence?
A bank statement showing your new name can form part of a later identity-document application, if it meets the receiving authority’s requirements. DVLA’s deed-poll and statutory-declaration route asks for additional evidence of the new name in use. Its published list includes a UK bank statement issued within the last 12 months.
This is why a rigid instruction to update the driving licence before every bank can be unhelpful. If your bank needs evidence you do not yet have, another permitted record, such as an employer letter, may help. Read the driving licence evidence guide and passport name-change guide for the relevant application.
How do I keep salary and benefit records consistent?
Coordinate the timing of the bank update with payroll and any benefit provider. Tell each provider what has actually changed and follow its instructions about account details. Report benefit changes promptly; do not wait until your bank, licence and passport are all finished.
Use the free name change organiser to track the bank, HMRC and other records separately. We cannot confirm payment continuity or change an account on your behalf.
What if I still need a deed poll?
Check the bank’s accepted evidence first. If an unenrolled deed poll fits your situation, our free template lets you prepare your own. Optional personalised PDF preparation costs £14.99, followed by printing and signing. It does not override the bank’s policy or remove its identity checks.
