How Much Does a Deed Poll Cost?

Yes — the legal effect is identical at every price. There is no legally prescribed form, paper, issuer or registry for a deed poll: validity comes from the correct declarations plus wet-ink signatures before two independent witnesses. What you pay for is convenience: wording accuracy, formatting, instructions, delivery speed and support.

Some posted services charge extra for each additional copy, add phone-order surcharges, tier their delivery prices, and charge separately for archiving. GOV.UK itself does not sell deed polls. Anyone implying they are the registry, or that an unenrolled deed is unofficial, is selling fear. There is no central UK name-change register.

The court fee is £53.05 (GOV.UK, checked 13 August 2026) and the process takes roughly two to three weeks, sometimes longer. Enrolment is only open from age 18. It adds a permanent public record in The Gazette, not extra legal validity, so check whether your organisation requires it before paying.

Institution fees apply however you made your deed poll: a standard adult passport is £102 online or £115.50 on paper, a child online passport is £66.50, and the DVLA updates your driving licence free (GOV.UK passport fees and DVLA, checked 13 August 2026). There is no extra surcharge for the name change itself.

Anyone who can copy the government wording confidently should use the free template. Anyone taking a spouse’s surname shown on the marriage certificate does not need a deed poll at all. Anyone whose organisation has demanded High Court enrolment should follow GOV.UK, not buy a second PDF from us first.
