Changing Your Name as a Trans Person in the UK

The deed records that you give up your old name and adopt your new name for all purposes. Complete the required signing and witnessing; our adult model uses ink signatures in both names and two independent witnesses aged 18 or over. You then update each record separately. Check the recipient’s evidence rules: HMPO and DVLA can require proof of the new name in use, while bank and health-record requirements vary.

The form asks for your names, address and date of birth — nothing else, and never a reason. Our PDF is £14.99; the free template is the same legal instrument if you copy it carefully. Under 16 needs the child pack and everyone’s parental-responsibility consent.

An unenrolled deed poll does not require public registration. The document still contains your former and new names, so share it through each recipient’s secure process. Check each record-holder’s evidence requirements first. Report benefit changes promptly and ask an employer, bank or another accepted provider for evidence showing your new name in use where needed. DVLA and passport applications have separate supporting-evidence rules. Bank policies differ, and some require enrolment or another form of evidence. Match travel bookings to the passport you will use.

Some organisations have a specific process. The Disclosure and Barring Service has a sensitive applications route for criminal record checks, HM Land Registry has form CNG for updating a property title in England and Wales, and Student Finance England will not change the gender on your account from a change of name deed unless you ask.

DBS checks. GOV.UK says DBS offers a confidential checking service for transgender applicants, known as the sensitive applications route, “available for all levels of DBS check - basic, standard and enhanced”. It gives the choice not to have any gender or name information disclosed on the DBS certificate that could reveal a previous gender identity. GOV.UK says you “should call or email the dedicated sensitive applications team before submitting your application”: telephone 0300 131 2784 or email sensitive@dbs.gov.uk (checked 24 September 2026). You still complete the same application form as any other applicant.

Property titles. If you own property in England or Wales, HM Land Registry accepts form AP1 or form CNG for a change of name for your affirmed gender. Both update the register in the same way; CNG is for sending more sensitive documents. See changing your name with HM Land Registry.

Student finance. Student Finance England says it won’t assume that a student has changed their gender: if it receives a change of name deed to a name associated with a different gender, it won’t change the gender on your account unless you ask. You can also ask to use the gender-neutral title Mx.

AQA and OCR publish specific routes for trans applicants. AQA can issue a replacement certificate; OCR supplies a certifying statement of results in your new name. Apply through the board's current instructions, ask how it handles confidential correspondence and share evidence only with the team that needs it. Other qualification issuers have their own policies.

AQA. Its certificate-change service for transgender people provides replacement certificates free after a legal name change connected to gender identity. It can be used once and covers AQA or its predecessor boards. AQA asks for copies of the deed poll showing both names, ID in the new name and the exam certificate, plus your delivery address. Do not post original certificates until AQA asks. The page gives its dedicated contact. You can also ask about removing or neutralising a gender-specific school or college name.

OCR. Its gender reassignment route provides a free certifying statement of results in your new name. Upload two forms of ID in that name, one confirming your current address, plus evidence linking your previous and current names, such as a deed poll or statutory declaration. Follow its ID and file-format rules. The online application requires card details for a temporary pre-authorisation; OCR says the service is not charged, but tracked UK mail or overseas delivery has a delivery charge. It gives no individual completion timescale.

Yes. Experian’s gender-transition support service says you do not need a Gender Recognition Certificate to update your credit history. Ask about its specialist process if a link to a former name raises privacy concerns. This is separate from updating your bank accounts.

The service can coordinate with the other credit reference agencies with your consent. Some public financial records, such as court judgments or insolvencies, may still show a former name. Read Experian’s advice pack and privacy limits, then contact its team through that official page.

No. They do different jobs. A deed poll changes your name, and most organisations will also update your title on request. A Gender Recognition Certificate changes your legal gender on your birth certificate and follows a separate application process on GOV.UK. Many trans people need only the deed poll for day-to-day life.
