How does a deed poll work for a trans name change?
Exactly as it does for anyone: a declaration that you abandon your old name and adopt your new name for all purposes, signed in ink in both names in front of two independent witnesses aged 18 or over. It takes effect immediately. HMPO, the DVLA, HMRC, banks and the NHS all accept an unenrolled deed poll.

How private is the process?
An unenrolled deed poll is a private document: there is no register and no publication. We treat name pairs as sensitive identity data, retained only for 12 months to honour your re-download link, never used in marketing, and handled discreetly in support correspondence. Do not enrol if privacy matters.

What order should I update my records in?
Driving licence first if you hold one — it is free — or passport first if you need to travel. One of those becomes your name-in-use evidence. Then bank, HMRC, employer, GP and NHS records, then insurers, utilities and everything else. None of those bodies need an enrolled deed.

Is a deed poll the same as a Gender Recognition Certificate?
No. They do different jobs. A deed poll changes your name, and most organisations will also update your title on request. A Gender Recognition Certificate changes your legal gender on your birth certificate and follows a separate application process on GOV.UK. Many trans people need only the deed poll for day-to-day life.
