Reverting to your maiden name: certificates or deed poll?
Two routes work. Showing your marriage certificate, the death certificate and your birth certificate together is free, but each organisation applies its own policy and some still ask for a deed poll. The deed poll route gives you a single document in the reverted name that passport, DVLA, HMRC and banks already know how to process.
If you would rather not retell the story at every counter, the deed poll is the kinder path. There is no time limit either way. A £14.99 PDF or the free wording are the same legal instrument. Competitor posted packs do not make the certificates more official.
In what order should I update records?
Gently, and only when you are ready. When you are: driving licence (free) or passport first, so you hold photo ID in the new name; then bank, HMRC, pensions and insurers — many of these you will already be contacting about the estate, so the name change can ride along. There is no penalty for waiting.

A deed poll does not update a will. Executors and banks work faster when the will, the deed poll and your photo ID all show the same name — print a fresh will in the new name and re-sign it with two witnesses in one room (Wills Act 1837, section 9). Keeping a connection to your spouse’s name
Plenty of people choose a middle path: keeping the married surname as a middle name, or creating a double-barrelled surname that carries both families forward.
