Can I prepare and sign a deed poll on the same day?
Yes, for a suitable straightforward case, if you can check the wording, print it and arrange the required witnesses that day. Our adult document follows the two-witness approach in the GOV.UK model. A downloaded file alone is not a completed deed.

Begin with the evidence requirements of your intended applications. For a DVLA name change using a deed poll or statutory declaration, you also need a document showing the new name in use. Do not assume the driving licence can always be the first updated record.

- Ask a suitable record-holder how it can update your name and issue evidence, such as an employer letter or bank statement. Check the recipient's permitted document types and date rules.

How long do passport and driving licence changes take?
The official processing period starts after the relevant authority has your application or documents, not when you buy a deed poll. At our 23 September 2026 check, HM Passport Office's usual UK timeframe was three weeks from receiving documents; DVLA asked postal applicants to allow four weeks.

For travel, follow HM Passport Office's advice to wait until you hold a valid passport before booking. Make sure the booking matches the passport you will use. Buying a deed poll does not speed up an existing passport application.
How long does an enrolled deed poll take?
GOV.UK says court enrolment can take several months, and you can request an update six months after applying. This is separate from preparing an unenrolled deed and normally creates a public record. Check whether your recipient actually requires enrolment before applying.
